Abstract

Coil type hemodialysers (Travenol CD type) were reused once or twice on four chronic hemodialysis patients. The coil dialyers were rinsed with tap water after-the first use and the blood and dialysis spaces were filled with 4% formalin solution.
With 31 new coil hemodialysers used, first reuse was done on all the 31, and twice reuse on 26 hemodialysers, There were two coil ruptures during rinsing procedures and one during hemodialysis. Blood clots were too much for reuse in two occas ions. It was felt that experience would diminish the incidence of failure.
Clearance studies revieled no significant changes in urea nitrogen and creatinine dialysance and in ultrafiltration rate. There were no febrile reaction and no significant changes in patients¢¥ vital signs and in hemoglobin levels.
Although reusability was not as Gambro¢¥s parallel f low dialysers which we compared with, reuse of the coil type was thought to have practical applicability. The cost of each hemodialysis treatment diminished by 30%.
